How to Take Attendance

Attendance is monitored in VIAS using the following designations:

  • Present: Student attended the entire class meeting
  • Tardy: Student arrived late or left class early; instructors can record the number of hours and minutes the student is tardy
  • Absent: Student did not attend class at all

Instructors must record attendance for each class meeting, including lab and clinical sessions for the following reports to populate correctly.

  1. SAP
  2. Percent Absent - attendance warnings of yellow and red along with the percentage the student has been absent from the class.
  3. Max Time - The length of the class on the attendance day.
  4. Attendance - Choose Present, Tardy or Absent.
  5. Time Tardy - Enter the hours and minutes missed from class.
  6. Add Make up Hours - Users can add make-up time if needed.
  7. Student Name - click the student’s name to go directly to the student’s profile.
  8. Notes - Instructors can add notes about the student’s absenteeism.
  9. Clear Attendance - After the attendance has been saved, the registrar can adjust attendance if needed.

10. Click Save Attendance.

Optional Notes: This can help remind faculty why a student was late to class or missed a class. It can also improve communication with Student Services when they are monitoring attendance.

Attendance locks at 2am for the previous day. If any changes need to be made after that time, you can contact the Registrar or Student Services.
